Most wood doors are sectional roll-up doors, though a swing-up wood door that’s meant to be painted can be affordably built in the driveway from a wood framework and plywood. Custom wood doors are typically made of durable softwoods such as Douglas fir, cedar, redwood or cypress, or from hardwoods such as oak or mahogany. Appearance-grade hardwoods are relatively expensive.
Honestly, my wife and I had almost made up our minds to go with another garage door company but we thought we should at least contact a few others, get some bids, and assess the competition. And the short story is that Precision impressed the heck out of us and we decided to go with them. All through the process of choosing the doors, getting bids, staining and sealing the doors and getting them ready for installation (which we did to save money - we're both retired), and the installation - everything went perfectly. After the installation we noticed that the garage door light, as per manufacturer's specs, stayed on for more than 4 1/2 minutes and we thought we would re-program the opener but we had some difficulty. So I called Precision for some advice and the manager of the Seattle operation, Nick, came to our house, the same day that I called, and programmed it for us!!! Now that's service. I would totally recommend Precision to anyone who is interested in a new garage door or just maintenance on the one that they already have. (I've recommended them to my daughter and her husband who have a carport and want to turn that into a garage.)
Widths - in addition to doors coming in a range of styles, they can be found as double-width and single-width styles. There are some serious considerations when opting for one over the other. For example, if a homeowner decides to use a single door that covers the entire opening of a two-car garage they will have to make serious structural modifications to the entry way;

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.

Step 1: Check the metal tracks inside the garage. Look at the mounting brackets that hold the tracks to the walls. If they're loose, tighten the bolts or screws at the brackets. Working inside the garage with the garage door closed, examine the tracks for dents, crimps, or flat spots. If there are any damaged spots, pound them out with a rubber mallet, or with a hammer and a block of scrap wood. If the tracks are badly damaged, they should be replaced.
An extension spring counterbalance system consists of a pair of stretched springs running parallel to the horizontal tracks. The springs lift the door through a system of pulleys and counterbalance cables running from the bottom corner brackets through the pulleys. When the door is raised, the springs contract, thus lifting the door as the tension is released. Typically these springs are made of 11 gauge galvanized steel, and the lengths of these springs are based on the height of the garage door in question. Their lifting weight capacity can best be identified by the color that is painted on the ends of the springs.

 On Monday afternoon the spring on our garage door snapped when the door came down after we had just backed out. As we were heading to a doctors appointment I did nothing about it until Tuesday morning. I called Precision Garage at about 8:30 am and their technician Aaron was at out home before 10am. He did a complete inspection and told us what was needed and also gave us an estimate on replacing the door as we have been thinking about that for sometime. He was very thorough and courteous. He explained everything to us. We decided to have new springs put in and order a new door. The springs were in within 20 minutes and we now have use of our door. They said it would be about three weeks for the new door to arrive and then they will install. We were blown away that we could get such quick service and so professional.There was no pressure and he went into detail about each kind of door that was available. Precision Garage is truly a great Thanksgiving gift for us. I'm anxious for the new door to come and I know we will love it.read more

Other features that add to the cost are thicker insulation and windows, especially insulated windows. The do-it-yourself tensioning systems also add a little to the door’s cost. Using your drill, add tension to the torsion spring. This system uses a single spring for a double door, but many manufacturers use two springs for a double door. The painted line on the spring acts as a gauge for the number of turns you put on the spring. To keep the bar from turning while you’re adding tension, attach a locking pliers to the bar on both ends of the spring. Apply lubricant for garage doors to the spring.

However, in addition to potentially causing injuries to the under-prepared DIYer, a malfunctioning door can become a safety hazard to you and your family. Keep in mind, according to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), over 13000 people checked into hospitals with garage related injuries in the United States in 2007. You don’t want to turn a loved one into a statistic just to save a few dollars!
